Fishing

And there off!!! Sunday 15th April and the fishing section headed for the waters of Sykehouse Fishery in Doncaster. After a hearty breakfast the draw for pegs was done and the 24 anglers headed for the complexes Twin Isles lake.

The all in was called and battle commenced but after the first couple of hours we began to question if there were any fish to be caught as all the field struggled. Perseverance prevailed for some as changes in tactics saw a few quality fish begin to be landed, with one carp of 10lb 02oz for Daz Woodhead.

Method feeder, pellet waggler or a combination of the two were the order of the day with those who adopted these approaches scoring best.

Result:

1st Lou Anginotti                          30lb 05oz

2nd Brad Croft                                25lb 13oz

3rdVin Rollinson                              24lb 0oz

4th Steve Bates                              22lb 01oz

Congratulations to the top 4.

Golden peg of £75.00 was not won therefore it rolls over to next match on Sunday 13th May on Alders at Oaks Lakes in North Yorkshire.

Fishing Section News October 2017

That’s it, the 2017 season has come to an end with match 6 at Woodhouse Grange on Sunday 24th Sept and the Fur n Feather on Sunday 15th Oct.

Match 6 Woodhouse Grange Heron.

We’ll start with the club’s final aggregate match held on Heron at Woodhouse Grange, Doncaster. Fished on the same day as the Weds-Utd derby some of anglers opted for the football so a smaller than average field of 20 anglers turned out on the day. That didn’t stop the fish from feeding though as the top 4 returned weights of over 60 lbs each. This result would also determine who the 2017 club champion would be as there was very little separating the top 5 or 6 leading anglers.

Result of Match 6:

  1. Lou Anginotti    83lb 10oz
  2. Dave Renshaw   71lb 05oz
  3. Gav Mackinder    65lb 12oz
  4. Russ Brunt   65lb 08oz

Well done to the top 4.

Fur n Feather 2017

3 x weeks later and it was Fur n Feather time. This year fished on the bottom pond at Barnburgh Lakes in Doncaster expectations were high of good weights on the day but things were’t as we had hoped. A combination of all 25 x pegs being filled for the event and 3 x days of solid pressure on the venue saw the fish backing off and reluctant to feed. That said, Dean Woodhead fished a blinder on a difficult day to take top spot with ease and walk away with £140.00 in money and prizes. At least everyone caught but maybe not as many as they wanted to. Oh well at least the sarnies and beer back at the club helped to overcome somes disappointment.

Result of Fur n Feather

  1. Dean Woodhead       67lb 11oz
  2. Chris Callaghan        42lb 03oz
  3. Rich Callaghan          41lb 03oz
  4. Dave Brittain          29lb 5oz

Well done and thank you to all who took part in this year’s event. Hope to see you all next year.

Also, many thanks to all who donated prizes and helped with event prior to and on the day. These are RBL Chapeltown, Thomas Flynn (Club Steward), Vin Rollinson, Paul Young, Lou Anginotti, Dave Brittain (D&J Brittain Ltd), Paul Pearson (UK Fixings Ltd), Dave Smith, Tony Roebuck, Norman Addy, Russ Brunt.

General News

This year’s presentation night will be held on Thurs 9th Nov at 8pm and all are very welcome to attend. The club’s AGM is to be held on Thurs 14th Dec at 8am and current members wishing to remain with the fishing section should attend and pay at least £10 towards subs or send the money along with an apology. Anyone wishing to join should give their names to the committee and attend on the night. Places on the proviso of there being a place available.

A few thanks

On behalf of all the fishing club members I would like to thank the following for their continued help, support and contribution to the fishing section:

  • Vin Rollinson and Paul Young for all the hard work they do throughout the year for the club and its members
  • Thomas Flynn and all the bar staff for putting up with 30 or so smelly anglers and their tall tales of angling prowess
  • The Committee and Members of RBL Chapeltown Branch for the generous donation and support they show the fishing section.

Messingham

The 3rd Messingham Thursday match took place on the 20th July.

The draw was made around 08.10 and at 08.15 the heavens opener. Still 25 anglers made their way to the appropriate peg the rain alternated between Monsoon and heavy drizzle but that didn’t stop 12 anglers weighing over 50lbs each.

The end of the match saw Richard Newton test the inside of his waterproofs by falling in…. at least he saw the funny side of it.

1st Mick Bailey                     94lbs 8oz

2nd Steve Bates                    91lbs 6oz

The inaugural fishing club senior citizens took place on Wednesday 5th July. The venue was Barnburgh Lake and fishing the bottom pond.

Due to holiday’s etc. only 10 could make it and 4 fishing club members swelled the number to 14.

Various methods worked on the day, maggot up in the water, paste on the bottom and straight lead to the island and these accounted for the top 3 anglers.

1st Lou Anginotti – 114lbs 5oz

2nd John Priestly -  102lbs 5oz

3rd Dave Renshaw -  94lbs 9oz

Fishing – Messingham

The second Messingham Thursday match took place on 15th June.

There was a strong turn out with 24 anglers making the journey.

In the May fixture spawning was a big issue and because of the unreliable weather they still hadn’t quite finished. It was the 20 mph blustery wind that was more of a hindrance though, hence 15 anglers still caught weights of 40lbs plus.

1st Mick Bailey   105lbs 8oz

2nd Lou Anginotti  93lbs 5oz

3rd Mick Hiner  89lbs 3oz

Brads translucent puppy required some more exercise!

We returned to the Legion after the match for prizes and a pint or three!

The 3rd instalment of this year’s match season saw the fishing section tackle Kestrel Lake at the Woodlands complex in Thirsk, North Yorkshire. The weather stayed reasonably fine throughout the 5 hour contest in which every one of the 20 anglers caught.

Apparently, Brad’s dog got lose and he had to wander around looking for it!

Following the match we made our way to the Legion to divvy up the spoils and celebrate with a couple of pints!

One man and his dog were at it again!

Match 6 – British Legion Claret Cup

This year the club members voted to include a 6th match to the calendar so a new trophy was needed. The fishing section committee tootled along to Rockingham Trophies in Hoyland and selected a beautiful claret cup as there is nothing in the trophy cabinet like it. A name was needed and it was no surprise when the club members unanimously voted to dedicate and name it the British Legion Chapeltown Claret Cup in recognition of all the support we receive from the club committee, staff and fellow members. The match was fished on the Match Lake at Sykehouse Fisheries near Goole. Our second trip of the season to this venue saw some incredible weights caught with 2 x ton plus weights and plenty of 70 and 80lb’s to boot. A great finale to the season and the best weights all year to help Christen the new trophy. It’s nice to win any of the matches but this one is going to be just a bit more special.

Result in ascending order:

3rd place –  Alan Malkin                  89lb 2oz

2nd place –  Steve Bates                 103lb 6oz

1st place and the British Legion Chapeltown Claret Cup – Steve Broadbent              107lb 11oz

Biggest fish award and the shield – Norman Addy.

Fur ‘n’ Feather – Alan Ward Memorial Trophy

This year’s Fur n Feather was fished at Messingham Sands Fisheries Swan Pond on the 26th Oct and it pee’d it down for 2 hours solid soaking the anglers and their kit to the core. Eventually the rain stopped and by the final whistle the sun was shining (bloody typical). Most of the fish came from the same area of the lake with pegs in the 40’s doing the business. After the match we all descended on the Legion for a sarnie, beer and prize giving.

The winner gets the Alan Ward Memorial Trophy presented to the club by Alan’s wife Margaret.

Award for the angler who’s had their best year to date.

The Terry Sharp Memorial Trophy

Each year, since the passing of Terry, the section’s committee have selected an angler who, in their opinion has had their best season to date and therefore a worthy recipient of the Terry Sharp Memorial Trophy or “Sharpie” as it has become known. Terry’s wife Monica donated the trophy in memory of Terry and though he was never a champion angler (a bloody good swimmer though judging by the number of times he fell in) he gave it his all and that’s why it should go to an angler whose remit is much the same. It’s never an easy decision to make but this year we all named the winner before we’d even discussed it so there was no doubt in our minds who it should go to.

Winner and the recipient of the Sharpie – with a superb 30 points and his 1st 100lb match win under his belt is Dave Beddoe.

What a season it’s been for the club championship with results the closest they’ve ever been. There is only a 2 x point difference between 4th and 2nd place with Steve Bates missing out on 3rd spot by 1 point.

Result:

Last weekend 7 of us travelled to Bewdley in Worcestershire to tackle the mighty river Severn.  All in all the river won but Tom Rollinson managed to catch a couple of Barbel with this beauty (picture attached) weighing 10lb 11oz. Chucks caught a tin of sardines that I threw at him. Excellent weekend.
