This format for this year’s snooker season is the same as last year, which began on the 13th September with the first match of the season being at home to Hillsborough Club, where we were took all of the points to win 5-0. Placing the Legion team at the top of the league being the only team to win all 5 points, the second match was away to Sheffield Transport at their Meadowhead club, who happen to be the only team in this division that insist on playing the miss rule, which unfortunately contributed towards losing two of the frames. In spite of the miss rule the final result on the night was a 2-3 win. Which after two games with 8 points out of a possible 10 means that the Legion team is currently still at the top of the league, but this will change after the next game as we have a bye on the 27th giving other teams a chance to go ahead.

The Fourth and final quarter of the Snooker league started in February, a little better than the 3rd segment with a 3-2 win, then 2 3-2 loses before a surge with the next two matches resulting in 4-1 wins then for the last game unfortunately going down with a 3-2 loss.

A few statistics for the end of the season, unfortunately John Hastings could not regain his form due to the handicap he received at midterm, but John Crozier’s winning streak continued with him winning all of his games, finishing the second half of the season winning thirteen out of fourteen games therefore making him the player of the season.

January saw the beginning of the third quarter of the Snooker league, after the mid season break with the new handicaps being applied, it also saw the Signing of Stuart Cutts to the team. The first game against Crookes ended with a 3-2 lose which unfortunately started a run of defeats for John Hastings due to his handicap being raised, but on the other hand it also saw John Crozier start a winning streak of winning six out of seven games.

December drew the Snooker league to the mid-season break with all teams having played each other both home and away, it also is the time for the league to review the players handicaps, which saw both John Crozier & Paul Pearson lose their 4 point handicaps due to having a bad season losing more frames than they won, it also resulted in John Hastings having his handicap raised from 12 points to 16 caused by winning 10 out of 14 frames he has played during the 1st half. It also meant that some of our opponents have had their handicaps also adjusted, with some of the players from new teams receiving large handicaps where they were of scratch at the beginning of the season.

RBL Snooker report

This year’s snooker season under the new rules has reached a point where we have played all the teams in our division once.

The first match of the season was away to Crookes Social Club, where we scored two points with two of the losing frames were lost on the Black Ball, the second match was at home to Allied No 5 resulting in three points and both the loosing frames were on Black Ball again. The third game was against Hillsborough Club No 2 where only one point was achieved and yet again two loosing Black Balls, Sheffield Transport No 2 were next resulting in only one point. St Mary’s No 2 were next gaining two points, then Spot On No 3 again two points. Which takes to the last game for the quarter season and in a position of being joint bottom, and due to play the other joint bottom team, where a good effort resulted in a four one win and yet again the losing game being Black Ball.

====================

The forthcoming winter snooker season is fast approaching, and with it comes changes to the league structure.

In previous seasons the league has consisted of several divisions containing 14 teams per division, the season was split into two halves, so that each team played all the other teams at home or away (13 matches) from September to December, then a break at Christmas before resuming in January until

April when all the matches are played opposite to the 1st half I.E. away / home, which made a total of 26 matches.

per division, where each team will play each other home & away in each half of the season, thereby lengthening the season by a further 2 matches making 28 in total.

Because of fewer teams registering due to several clubs, pubs Etc closing down, the league has been re structured for 8 teams

The handbook meeting is on Tuesday September 6th when we will discover who our opponents will be, and the league will start with the 1st game on Wednesday 14th September.

The Snooker team currently has a few positions available for new players, anyone interested in registering contact Ken Barton, or pass details to any member of the team. Players registered must be available for a 7.00pm start for away matches.
